Rely on a Same-Sex Divorce Specialist

When the marriage to your same-sex partner is coming to an end, turn to Peter J. Herrmann of Affordable Divorce for help. Specializing in same-sex divorces, he knows how to get the process completed efficiently and at a price you can afford. As long as you are a legal resident of Connecticut, he's got all the bases covered.

  • What is the process for same-sex divorces in Connecticut?

The right to obtain a divorce in any state depends on two factors: first, the parties must have a legal relationship that is recognized by that state; and second, they must meet the state's residency requirements. A same-sex couple who marries in Connecticut will be able to obtain a divorce in Connecticut as long as one of the parties still resides in Connecticut at the time of the divorce action. Parties who make a transitory visit to Connecticut for the purposes of becoming married will not thereby confer divorce jurisdiction on the Connecticut courts unless they can prove residency. Likewise, if both parties initially reside in Connecticut and move to a state that does not recognize same-sex marriages, they will not be able to obtain a divorce in the new state because they will be deemed to be unmarried. Residency is the key factor to obtaining a divorce in Connecticut.

  • What are the child custody rights of same-sex divorces in Connecticut?

A child born or adopted during the marriage is considered a child of the marriage, and both parties have custody rights. In the event of divorce, both spouses may claim child custody or visitation, and the parent who receives custody may receive payments of child support from the noncustodial parent.

Read a Same-Sex Divorce Testimonial

This is a testimonial that I received from one of my same-sex couples that divorced using me for mediation.

"Good morning Peter,

Sharron and I went to court on Tuesday, and everything went smoothly. As you suggested, we went to the clerk when we first went into the courtroom and asked to be moved up on the docket. We were seen second. I want to thank you for your service and support over these last few months.

While divorce is never easy (nor is it supposed to be), I am so thankful there are people like you out there who can help us through it at an extremely reasonable price. It occurred to me we probably could have figured out the paperwork ourselves, but the real value of your service was to keep the process moving and assure us that our agreements were reasonable.

You can be sure I will recommend you to anyone I know going through the same thing. If you ever need a reference or a client who just wants to talk to someone who worked with you, don't hesitate to call me.

Thank you again."
